In our June Volunteer Spotlight, we meet a volunteer veteran with decades of experience donating her time and effort to worthy causes throughout east Idaho.
“Anything you love, you can volunteer for,” said Portneuf Valley Paintfest Team Captain Coordinator Cathy McPherson
Since the early 1970’s, Cathy McPherson has been giving of herself to those in need. She’s worked with many of the organizations in east Idaho including the United Way, the Idaho Foodbank and the Toys for Tots program to name a few. Cathy was also one of the early volunteers with Portneuf Valley Paintfest which started in 1987, painting homes for the areas deserving senior citizens.
“These are people that don’t have the financial means to do it,” Cathy said, “many of them have retired many, many years ago when their incomes were considerably less than what our average income would be here today.”
Needless to say, Cathy’s spent a lot of time with brush in hand.
“I’ve captained a lot of teams, put a lot of paint on a lot of homes myself, climbed scaffolding, and helped out with ladders and supplies,” said Cathy. “Pretty soon, I was coordinating the teams and putting things together and it’s just evolved.”
But even with all the time she’s spent putting a fresh coat on for those in need, one thing never gets old for Cathy.
“Seeing the reaction of the homeowners,” Cathy said. “Literally yesterday I was working with some homeowners and stopping by and seeing how things were going and they were in tears. They’d never believed their houses would look nicer than anybody else’s house on the block.”
And for those looking to get started lending a helping hand, Cathy says it’s easy to get going.
“I just want to encourage people to just step outside their boundaries and take a look and help wherever they can,” said Cathy. “I think the world is a better place because of it”
