POCATELLO, Idaho- The Idaho State softball team lost its home opener at Miller Ranch Stadium to Utah State, 12-4 on Wednesday afternoon. The Bengals dropped to 13-18 on the season.
Utah State had 14 hits on three errors while the Bengals scored their four runs on eight hits and committed three errors.
“It was not a good day,” Idaho State coach Julie Wright said. “Four runs should be enough to compete for a win. As you can see we were not even close. We have to be better on the mound and I think they can be. I know all of them well. I put this staff together and I believe in them. They just didn't get it done today.”
Katelyn Marquez, Terah Blackwell and Maddy Hickman each had two hits to lead ISU. Blackwell and Hickman also had two RBI.
Amanda Fitzsimmons took the loss in the circle, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing eight hits, eight runs and struck out two. Bailey Foster pitched two innings and gave up four hits and three runs and Haley Douglas pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing two hits and one run.
Utah State jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the third inning. The Bengals scored a run in the bottom of the third on a Blackwell double down the left field line.
USU scored five runs in the fourth and ISU countered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to cut the Aggie lead to 8-4. Blackwell had an RBI on a bases loaded walk and Hickman had a two RBI single. The Aggies added three runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Idaho State returns to the field for a double header on Friday, April 5 vs. Weber State beginning at 2 p.m. The teams then play one game at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 6.
