Idaho State University Head Basketball Coach Joe O'Brien has resigned effective immediately.

ISU Athletics Director Jeff Tingey announced O'Brien's resignation Monday saying Assistant Coach Deane Martin will assume responsibilities as interim head coach.

The 2011-12 season marked O'Brien's sixth year as head basketball coach for the ISU Bengals.  During that time Idaho State won just 56 games compared to 105 losses.  ISU's record so far this season is 2-8 with those wins coming against Colorado Christian and North Dakota.  O'Brien's resignation falls on the heels of a 71-59 defeat at the hands of struggling University of Utah.

Coach Deane Martin is in his first year at Idaho State University.  Martin brings some head coaching experience to the table having lead the Potros Itson, a professional team in Mexico.  Martin also spent some time in the NBA's Developmental League with the Bakersfield Jam and the Dakota Wizards.

ISU's Sports Information Office is sheduled to give a news conference at 5 p.m. Monday evening.  KPVI Sports Director Matt Gittins will have much more on this announcement and it's impact on ISU athletics tonight on KPVI News Six.

ISU plays its next game Thursday at home against Wyoming.
