POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State women’s basketball team tipped off the 2012-13 season as ISU hosted Colorado State Pueblo in an exhibition match-up Saturday afternoon in Reed Gym. The Bengals defeated the Thunderwolves 50-24.
Idaho State’s defense was the highlight of the contest as the Bengals held CSU Pueblo to just 24 total and 10 second-half points. ISU forced 24 turnovers and recorded 13 total steals during the game. ISU’s defense allowed just eight field goals for the Thunderwolves as CSU Pueblo shot just 19.5 percent from the floor and 12.5 percent from beyond the arc.
“I was very pleased with our effort, especially on the defensive end,” ISU Head Coach Seton Sobolewski said. “We got on the floor a little bit, we got some steals and did a really good job of helping down on the post.”
Offensively, ISU struggled a little bit to find a rhythm but two players did score in double digits as junior guard Lindsey Reed and senior forward Ashleigh Vella led the team with 10 points apiece. Reed also recorded seven rebounds.
Junior forward Cydney Horton had a solid performance with seven rebounds and eight points while senior guard Abyee Maracigan led the Bengals with a team-high nine grabs off the glass.
Overall, ISU shot 33.3 percent from the floor and connected with six shots from 3-point range for a 28.6 shooting percentage.
ISU’s season officially begins Friday, Nov. 9 as the Bengals travel to Manhattan, Kansas to face the Wildcats of Kansas State. The game begins at 4:30 p.m. MST.
