An update on the condition of Lorne Red Elk who suffered severe head trauma over the weekend behind Duffy's Tavern in Pocatello where he was working part-time.
His family is here in eastern Idaho at Lorne's side at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.
Lorne is still in critical condition. His family spoke to us today about their father.
His son Randy says Lorne was loved by just about anyone he met. At Duffy's he worked as a bouncer for seven years and made sure his colleagues there made it to their cars safely after work. While he only officially worked at Duffy's on Friday night's, he was there almost every night, keeping an eye on things. He would also help out by taking out the garbage and help close the bar after hours.
Randy also says his father was respected, even by those who were escorted out of Duffy's, because Lorne always treated them with respect. A big man who never used a loud voice or brute strength to accomplish the job.
Randy Red Elk, Lorne's son: "He would give the shirt off his back for anybody. And there were a lot of people in this town that liked him. Nobody that I know that didn't."
Lorne Red Elk, for those who don't know, was a long time employee -- nine years -- here at NBC Newschannel 6. He was a camera operator who directed the anchors from the studio floor. He went out of his way to make the show run smoothly and no doubt if you've watched the news, you've seen his work.
But more importantly, he was a friend to myself and just about anyone who knew him.
The Pocatello Police are still actively investigating the attack.
