Crews recover body of drowning victim

Associated Press - June 29, 2009 7:54 PM ET

EMMETT, Idaho (AP) - Gem County Sheriff Chuck Rolland says a 17-year-old drowned while swimming with friends in a canal near Emmett.

Authorities identified the victim Monday as Travis Jakovac, of Caldwell.

Sheriff's deputy Shawn Dillon says the boy was swimming with friends in the Black Canyon Canal when he was sucked into a tunnel Sunday evening. The teen's friends drove to the other end of the tunnel but never saw the teen emerge.

Recovery crews discovered the body Monday morning.

Jakovac was a student at Caldwell High School and would have been a senior in the fall.

Black Canyon Canal is an irrigation canal off limits to the public, but authorities say it's a popular place for people to swim.
