Chubbuck Dog Spray Painted

Vandals in one Chubbuck neighborhood struck an unlikely target over the weekend -- they spray painted a dog.

Police do not know who did it, but the vandals used red spray paint to get a point across.

It's not every day you hear of dog vandalism, but Wiley's is a victim of just that.  On one side of his stomach "Go" and the other side "Home".

Marilyn Hardenbrook, Wiley's owner: "I think spray painting him is really a malicious thing to do."

Hardenbrook admits Wiley walks with the neighbor kids to the bus stop.

Marilyn Hardenbrook:  "Some of the moms say, 'Thanks, Wiley watched them get on the bus again!  He's just a friendly old guy.'"

But says he mainly stays in his own yard.

Marilyn Hardenbrook: "I don't know why he would be out of the yard; he pretty much stays in the yard."

Tammy Briscoe, Neighbor: "I notice him in his own yard, but I've never seen him stray."

Others see Wiley wandering around the neighborhood.

Beth Stemberg, Neighbor: "He does come through, yeah he does come through, about every morning he's got his 7 o'clock run!"

But Wiley's travels don't seem to bother the neighbors we talked to and when the heard what happened to Wiley they could not believe it.

Beth Stemberg: "I think it's pretty sad!  If you've got a problem, talk to the people.  Don't do it to the dog, it's not the dogs fault."

Tammy Briscoe: "I don't know how they did it, 'cus a dog doesn't hold still."

Wiley's owners have tried to get the spray paint off, but it won't wash off.

Marilyn Hardenbrook:  "Someone suggested hairspray because it takes ink off wall in the house, that didn't do anything."

Thinking if the vandals were trying to send a message, they could have chosen a better way.

Marilyn Hardenbrook:  "I wish they would have come and talked to me and said we really don't like your dog in our yard.  That would have been a real nice thing to do."

The Bannock County Sheriff's Office says they are still investigating the case.

If they do figure out who spray painted Wiley, they will likely not issue a citation but a stern warning!
