UPDATE 9/23/21 4:00 p.m.: Jefferson School District Superintendent Chad Martin posted on theThursday afternoon that effective immediately, backpacks would no longer be allowed at Rigby Middle School, Farnsworth Middle School, Rigby High School and Jefferson High School.
ORIGINAL: A 13-year-old student is in custody after bringing a gun to school.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, around 9 a.m. Thursday morning, the school resource officer at Rigby Middle School reported a female student in a restroom with a firearm.
The school resource officer was able to disarm the student and take her into custody without incident.
The sheriff's office said no shots were fired and no one was injured.
The investigation is ongoing. The sheriff's office said the case has been sent to the Jefferson County Prosecutor for charges.
According to a Facebook post by the Jefferson School District, classes at Rigby Middle School remained in session Thursday but parents could choose to pick up their student, if they chose.
This is the second time this year a student has brought a gun to Rigby Middle School.
In May, a 14-year-old female student pulled a pistol out of her backpack and fired multiple shots inside the school.
Two students and an employee were shot but did recover.
