Citizens for Higher Education is announcing an effort today to place on the ballot the question of whether to turn Eastern Idaho Technical College into a community college with the name of College of Eastern Idaho and win the subsequent campaign with Bonneville County voters.

To place the issue on the ballot requires 1,000 valid signatures under Idaho law and the proposed community college district would encompass all of Bonneville County. The group’s goal is to put the issue on the May 2017 ballot. The announcement will point out that using EITC’s existing campus will avoid the cost of building buildings, that the Idaho Legislature has already set aside $5 million for startup costs and that the local property tax component would only total $13.371 for the average homeowner in Bonneville County per year. A community college will help fill the needs of local employers, provide a source of affordable higher education, providing significant saving for students and their families, and provide a significant boost to the local economy.

1 Based on an average price of a home in Bonneville County, from January – July, 2016, of $178,253 as computed by the Snake River Multiple Listing Service and applying the homeowner’s exemption for owner occupied homes which exempts half the value of that kind of home from property taxes. The tax rate is $15 per $100,000 in taxable value as determined by the recent Community College Study Panel.
